Gateguards (UK) Ltd – News and Updates

We are settling in well in our new facility at Newquay Airport. Gateguards has leased a HAS (Hardened Aircraft Shelter), originally intended to house part of the UK’s Nuclear Deterrent Force, in the form of Blackburn Bucanneers and latterly Panavia Toradoes. If anyone would like to donate either of the above to use as our own gateguard, we would be only too happy to give her a good home!

We have several new projects which are under way or imminent, including:-

- A new-build replica Hawker Hurricane to be constructed and installed on the Thames Promenade in Windsor in time for the Diamond Jubilee next year. The replica will depict a Hurricane flown by Squadron Leader John Grandy who commanded 249 Sqn at North Weald during the Battle of Britain.

- A new-build Supermarine Spitfire Mk.II for the Bentley Priory Battle of Britain Trust, for installation in 2012. .

- The refurbishment of the existing Bentley Priory Battle of Britain Trust Hawker Hurricane replica.

New fabrication systems – We have been liaising with industry specialists to develop a reliable process for manufacturing accurate replicas of various aircraft in scales other than 1:1 (eg: 1/10th, 1/4, etc.) This is much more difficult than building full size replicas, but we believe we have cracked it, and hope to produce the first examples for public display by the middle of 2012.

Our current project, the Red Tail P51D “Duchess Arlene” is progressing well. Please watch gallery pages for progress photos and artwork.

We will be undertaking the full restoration and refurbishment of a replica Nieuport 17 World War 1 biplane fighter. This is to be completed using the correct doped linen fabric. This replica will be available for sale once restored, and the purchaser can specify the colour scheme and markings of their choice. Watch our “Work-in-Progress” page for updates, and contact us if you have any queries.

We have received enquiries and had discussions regarding the fabrication of replicas of the following historic aircraft, but in each case the cost in the current financial climate is too much for the client to bear. If we were to build more than one replica, the unit cost would be significantly reduced, so if anyone else out there is considering acquiring such a replica, please let us know:

- Avro Lancaster B1

- De Havilland DH. 98 Mosquito B Mk IV

- North American B25 Mitchell

- Westland Whirlwind Mk. 1a twin-engined fighter-bomber

- Gloster Gladiator

- Messerschmitt Bf109 G-6
